América la Hermosa (2026)

When Matt McCutchen approached me about a new concert opener for the Florida Wind Band’s 4th of July concert, we knew we wanted something flashy but also wanted it to be fresh and unique – not just another patriotic fanfare.

 

We decided to pay homage to Tampa’s rich Cuban history. And thus I give to you a latin take on America the Beautiful (América la Hermosa en espańol). 

 

The first quote of the main melody takes place in the solo trumpet at measure 16 on top of the montuno piano accompaniment with latin percussion established back at 4. After a woodwind development of that montuno feel at measure 34, 

the “America” melody really gets going at 47. 

 

The optional solo section from measure 62-87 is preferred, but not binding. 

Trombone is the preferred solo voice here, but cues have also been written for trumpet and tenor sax. The soloist can play the solo as written, ad lib or deviate completely (chord changes also provided). 

 

However you decide to perform this piece, let it rip! The percussion section plays an integral part in setting the style and encourage the brass to really bite, while still letting the woodwinds have their moments too. And remember, this piece is being premiered in Florida in the middle of the summer – so your performance should be en fuego!
