Ascent(2014)

for brass ensemble and percussion

ASCENT depicts the journey to the top of a mountain, an expedition to the most scenic of views. The voyage to the top is not always an easy path, but always worth it in the end. The work in itself is based on an ascending three note motif, initially heard in the first trumpet at the start of the composition. While the climbing melodic idea is most prominent, its inversion also plays a notable role beginning in measure 31 in the euphonium. The section from measure 34-60 maintains the inverted figure, only to revisit the initial theme in measure 61.
