Dream Mountain (2015)
for horn quintet
Dream Mountain depicts an expedition to the top of a mountain, albeit an imaginary
one due to the lack of this scenic landscape in the state I reside. Florida’s flat
countryside leaves a lot to be desired in terms of scenery, so I wanted to compose a
work that would temporarily rectify that.
The introduction of the composition reflects the breathtaking view of an enormous
mountain, and the sense of serenity that accompanies it. The three-note motive
outlined in the first and second horn serves as the primarily theme of the work. This
combination of notes is also found in inversion and depicted in several other moods as
the excursion takes several laborious episodes. After a steep and arduous expedition,
the summit of Dream Mountain is finally reached.
Commissioned and Premiered by the Summit Brass Horns.
